As more users get technology friendly, even the companies are shifting their focus from the traditional printed coupons to the more popular digital ones. The number of people with access to internet increases everyday and so does the volumes of online shopping. In such situations an online coupon is preferred over printed coupons.
The printed coupons still hold sway over the retail store market but its presence in newspapers and magazines is also reducing due to the presence of Craigslist and other operator on the Internet.
Otherwise the statistics reveal that the USA is now redeeming coupons much more than they did before the recession. The average amount has gone up to $3.7 billion in 2010 from the $2.6 billion in 2006.

Mobiles are changing the face of shopping in the U.S. by converting paper coupons to electronic mediums, particularly on the retailer side. Anticipated new smartphone users are more likely than current owners to use electronic coupons, including mobile coupons. Almost half of American shoppers are at least somewhat likely to use electronic coupons, many of which are accessed and redeemed via mobile devices. Males are more likely than females to use their smartphone to download coupons, making mobiles a good targeting medium for males.

"A key finding of the survey is that smartphones are a good medium for reaching males with product information," said Robert Levy, founder of the Best New Product Awards. "Electronic coupons are much more effective with males than traditional paper coupons, and they are most effective with shoppers ages 18-34."
